About Reiki

lotus in lakeReiki (pronounced ray-key) is a method of therapeutic touch developed in Japan. Engaging the body’s own self-healing, this healing art is wonderful for stress reduction, relaxation, and creating a greater sense of balance.

The definition of Reiki is universal (or spiritually guided) life-force energy. This energy can be transmitted via the laying-on of hands through a practitioner attuned to be a channel for it.

During Reiki sessions, this healing energy works directly on the energy field (or aura) surrounding your body as well as the life-force energy flowing within it. Reiki helps clear energy centers and pathways in the body of blockages, restoring a more harmonious flow. These energy centers are known as chakras and often symbolized by blossoming flowers.

Any problem involving mind, body or spirit can benefit from this healing art, but it’s not a complete substitute for medical care if you need it. Fortunately, Reiki works well in conjunction with Western medical treatments and is increasingly practiced in many hospitals and therapeutic settings.

Preliminary evidence from some studies (as well as clinical observation) indicate that Reiki treatment can be beneficial for overall well-being as well as a range of conditions, including:

  • Stress
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Emotional trauma (such as PTSD)
  • Digestive problems
  • Side effects from cancer treatment (such as fatigue and nausea)
  • Improved heart rate variables in cardiac patients
  • Recovery from surgery or sports injury

An ability that is easy to acquire through class instruction, Reiki is something that anyone – and perhaps everyone – should learn for self-care and balance. Very easy to perform, self-treatment with Reiki can be significantly helpful for people suffering from chronic or serious health conditions. And it’s an effective means of maintaining a healthy balance as preventative care.

Reiki is also a wonderful skillset for caregivers, enabling them to provide healing touch to their patients or loved ones.

Guiding Principles

Formalized into a healing system by Mikao Usui (1865-1926), who pursued a path to Enlightenment, Reiki includes a set of guiding Principles. While this healing system is not a religion, its Principles are excellent goals for everyone’s life, whatever your particular spiritual path.

Reiki Hands

The Reiki Principles are:

Just for today, do not worry.

Just for today, do not anger.

Honor your parents, teachers and elders.

Earn your living honestly.

Show gratitude to every living thing.

Usui referred to Reiki as “The Secret Art of Inviting Happiness.” To learn more about this healing art, please review these informative pages:
